Hi All,
Jer here.
Yesterday at noon we arrived in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. The island is 1300 miles off the east coast of Africa and is part of the Mascarene archipelago which also includes Reunion and Rodrigues islands. Mauritius gained its independence from the British in 1968. This is what Port Louis looked like from where our ship was docked.
We took this small boat water taxi from our ship to the city waterfront. It was a bit of a shaky ride.
Helen needed her Panama hat today, the sun was hot!
The waterfront area is new, modern and upscale. Lots of shopping in high end stores. Mauritius is a popular vacation spot with many luxury beach hotels
This shopping promenade uses these colorful umbrellas to provide shade, very clever and pretty.
A cute fish fountain in the waterfront area.
There are lots of new buildings around the waterfront.
Some older buildings around town.
The Mauritius parliament building.
Like the woman in this picture, many use umbrellas to provide protection from the sun.
We took a walk through this nice air conditioned mall, we needed some cool air.
I think I should have gotten a discount here? No way.
After our walk around the waterfront, we ventured farther into the city and it was a lot different to say the least. The streets were jammed with people. We walked down this street which was like a big flea market. While we felt safe everywhere we went, we just had a feeling we should be very careful. Also, this part of the city wasn’t spic and span clean like the waterfront.
We passed this mosque that was just letting out after mid day prayers.
This windmill is in the middle of town. Don’t know what it is used for today.
These fishing boats were anchored near our ship. They are not luxury cruise ships!
So that is a look at our day in Mauritius. The island is beautiful and I am sure the beach resorts are fabulous. Due to the distance, I doubt if many Americans come here.
Our next port is the island of Reunion, which is actually province number 974 of France. Will report on that tomorrow.
One last picture. Do you think whoever was driving this boat got in trouble :). They did a nice job on this bridge!
Bye for now.
Jer and Helen
