Tauranga and The Hobbit, an Evening in the Shire

Hi All,
Jer here.  This morning we arrived in Tauranga.  I know, where the heck is that?  It’s just a bit south and east down the coast from Auckland.  Tauranga sits on the Bay of Plenty, so named by Captain Cook.  A large percentage of the world’s Kiwi fruit is grown in this region.

We arrived to cloudy and rainy skies, but the afternoon cleared up.  This a view of the volcano Mount Maunganui just off the ship’s bow.  Thankfully the volcano has not erupted for a few thousand years.

Tonight we are going to an event that all you Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans would like.  We received this invitation last week for a shore-side event.

Much of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies were filmed in New Zealand and we are going to get to tour the movie set.  This news has our granddaughters excited, we wish they could be with us.
Tomorrow at 5am we sail for our next port of Napier, NZ.  We have planned a full day wine tour.  It should be fun as NZ is famous for their wines.
When we left Auckland, we started the third segment  (of 6) on the World Cruise.  This segment is 22 days long and takes us to Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, all in NZ.  We then have three sea days before arriving in Australia.  We visit Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Albany, and Perth.  NZ and Australia are the two places we most wanted to visit on the cruise.
So, bye for now.  We will post some pictures of our night in Hobbiton tomorrow.  BTW, in consideration for all of our friends who are freezing, we won’t give a report on our weather today.  Let’s just say sunscreen was required :).
Jer and Helen
